The Big Bend sky has a way of humbling you. Out here, the Milky Way shines bright enough to cast shadows. Galaxies shimmer at the edge of vision. The silence of the desert makes the stars feel closer than ever. Big Bend After Dark was created to share that magic. We offer more than stargazing—we create unforgettable moments.

A person with a beard is sitting cross-legged on rocks in a desert landscape and making a meditation gesture with both hands, wearing a black shirt with a glowing galaxy design. Behind them are large rock formations, and the night sky is filled with stars, including the Milky Way and a bright planet.

Hi, my name is Tres Morris and I am the owner and creator of Big Bend After Dark. I am currently 39 years old and live in the darkest night sky reserve on the planet near Terlingua, TX. Thats me in the picture hanging out at my absolute favorite place, Big Bend National Park. I created After Dark to make the night sky and astronomy more accessible to visitors and our community. I keep learning as much as possible on the topic of astronomy and love sharing and speaking with others about the wonders of our universe.

My love for astronomy started around 2008 when I discovered Carl Sagan. I devoured everything I could by him, watched all the documentaries and videos, and really started to have a desire to learn more about space and astronomy. My love for astrophotography came along sometime after 2010 when I started seeing amazing pictures of our Milky Way online. I started following all the great photographers and would share with all my friends on social media. This led me to my first telescope purchase in 2012 that I would take on camping trips down to Big Bend. The place where I really fell in love with the night sky! Seeing my friend’s reactions to witnessing the rings of Saturn for the first time really solidified my passion for the hobby.

Pre-covid, I was extremely busy in my professional career and didn’t have much extra time to pursue anything other than observational astronomy. In 2021, I decided to accept a remote job and move back from Denver to my hometown in Texas to help take care of my mom who was retiring and transitioning to being home full time. This allowed me a lot more free time to pursue my passions and I finally made my first camera purchase with the goal to start my journey into landscape and deep-sky astrophotography.

Over the past few years, I have traveled to some of the darkest locations around the country to explore the night sky and shoot astrophotography. While the Southwest offers countless incredible dark-sky destinations, none quite captured my heart like Big Bend. This eventually led me to make it my permanent home in 2024. I have since decided to become a voice for responsible astro-tourism in the area and a dark sky advocate for all of Texas. Thank you for being here and I look forward to meeting you all under a dark sky very soon.

Much love, peace, and clear skies to all,

Tres Morris aka Moon Legs
